What to Expect at the Appointment
- Basic paperwork about you and your pet.
- Questions about where your pet came from, diet, behavior, and home environment.
- A full physical exam: eyes, ears, teeth, skin, abdomen, heart, lungs, and joints.
- Discussion of breed-specific health risks and what to watch for.
Questions to Ask
- When should I switch from puppy/kitten food to adult food?
- Which toys are safe or unsafe?
- What are good teething options?
- When can my pet start structured exercise?
- When should training begin?
Vaccines & Preventive Care
- First round of vaccines and parasite prevention typically starts at this visit.
- Boosters are usually given every 3-4 weeks within 4-6 months old.
- Core vaccines for dogs: parvovirus, distemper, hepatitus, rabies.
- Core vaccines for cats: panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, rabies.
- Additional vaccines may be recommended cased on lifestyle and location.
General Services to Plan For
- Spray/Neuter: Often done between 8 weeks and 9 months depending on health and breed.
- Dental Care: Begin brushing early; most pets need annual cleanings.
- Microchipping: Permanent ID to help reunite lost pets with their families.
