September is Pet Health Insurance Month across North America, which means it’s a time for insurance companies, veterinarians, shelters, rescues and pet owners to shine a light on the importance of pet health insurance to protect our four-legged friends.
While pet insurance is still relatively new to the US and Canada, there are over 1.6 million North American pets insured by NAPHIA member companies. However, with a total of 179 million pets in North America, that still leaves many pet owners without the financial means to provide proper care when the need arises. And any experienced pet owner knows, the need often does arise.
What does Pet Health Insurance cover?
The three main types of pet health insurance coverage are:
- Accidents: Coverage for veterinary treatment for unexpected injuries.
- Accident & Illness: Coverage to treat both accidents, as well as sickness, disease or any changes to your pet’s normal healthy state.
- Wellness: (also called Routine or Preventive Care) which may include vaccinations, tests, and dental work. This is also sometimes called “Routine” or “Preventative” care.
Some companies also offer Endorsements (sometimes called ‘Riders’) that add specific types of coverage to an existing policy.
If your pets are already covered, we’d like to give you a furry high-five. Now, go out and spread the word!
